CAF President Dr Patrice Motsepe held a press conference in Johannesburg on Wednesday 22 July at 12h00 local time, addressing members of the media on a number of CAF and African football matters — including reflecting on Africa's performance at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Dr Motsepe's address came as part of ongoing discussions on the development and future direction of the sport across the continent, with Africa having made history at the 2026 World Cup with a record 10 representatives at the global tournament.
Among the highlights of the press conference was Motsepe's praise for Cape Verde goalkeeper Vozinha, whose remarkable performances at the World Cup captured the imagination of the football world. The CAF President held him up as an example of what African football can achieve. Motsepe also discussed areas that require improvement as CAF continues its ambition of helping an African team win the FIFA World Cup in the future.
In a significant personal announcement, Motsepe confirmed that he will not serve more than two terms as CAF President. He also weighed in on the SAFA presidential race — a topic of considerable interest to South African football at a moment of transition for the national association.
Africa's focus now turns to the Women's Africa Cup of Nations, which begins in Morocco on Sunday 26 July 2026.
