The waiting is over. After weeks of speculation, a disrupted pre-season and the familiar anxiety that now accompanies every coaching appointment at South Africa's most scrutinised football club, Kaizer Chiefs have confirmed their new head coach — and he has arrived at Naturena ready to work.
Fernando Da Cruz has officially arrived in South Africa and joined the team in pre-season training. The 54-year-old French-born coach, who signed a two-year contract with a one-year option, effective 1 July 2026, brings with him a technical team and a philosophy shaped by decades of work across Europe and Africa.
Joining him on the bench will be assistant coach Mahmoud Abbas, a 35-year-old Egyptian with vast experience, while the sports science portfolio will come under the direction of Julien Le Heran, who was also born in France.
For Amakhosi supporters who have endured years of transition, disappointment and managerial instability, the question is a familiar one: is this the appointment that finally ends the drought?
The Man Behind the Appointment
Da Cruz is no stranger to the Amakhosi setup, nor to South African football.
He was part of Nasreddine Nabi's technical staff when the Tunisian was appointed Amakhosi head coach in 2024, taking charge of pre-season training before the Moroccan Football Federation tabled an offer he could not turn down — a Technical Director role with the FRMF that took him to Rabat.
Based in Rabat, he oversaw the federation's football structures, working closely with development teams, coaches and the senior national side — which has advanced to the Round of 16 of the 2026 FIFA World Cup currently being staged across the USA, Mexico and Canada.
His European credentials are equally compelling. His remarkable coaching journey includes three separate stints at French powerhouse Lille, where he worked under renowned Argentine manager Marcelo Bielsa and helped nurture future international stars such as Idrissa Gueye, Lucas Digne, Victor Osimhen, and Eden Hazard.
Those are not incidental names — they are among the finest players of their generation. The environment Da Cruz helped build at Lille produced European quality at scale.
In the 2022/23 season, he impressively guided AS FAR to the Moroccan Botola League title — cementing his reputation as a proven winner beyond the development sphere.
The Context: Eleven Coaches in Eleven Years
To understand the weight of expectation bearing down on Da Cruz's shoulders, it is necessary to confront an uncomfortable statistic.
His appointment makes him the 11th coaching change at Kaizer Chiefs in 11 years, following Steve Komphela, Giovanni Solinas, Ernst Middendorp, Gavin Hunt, Stuart Baxter, Arthur Zwane, Molefi Ntseki, Cavin Johnson, Nasreddine Nabi, and the co-coaching duo of Khalil Ben Youssef and Cedric Kaze.
